Indian English is one of the largest varieties of English in the world, and one of the most instantly recognisable. Yet it is usually described by what it is not: not American, not British, not "neutral". That framing hides the more useful fact. Indian English has a stable consonant inventory, its own vowel system, and a rhythm that has been documented in five decades of linguistic research. This guide walks through those features, and then through the one that actually decides whether a listener keeps up on a call.
What the Indian English Accent Actually Is
Linguists tend to work with the idea of Standard Indian English: the pronunciation of educated speakers who use English regularly in professional and public life. Nobody imposed that standard. It is a descriptive label for features that recur across speakers whose first languages are otherwise unrelated.

The Consonants Listeners Notice First
Consonants carry most of the perceptual weight, because they are where the substitutions are categorical rather than gradual. Six recur across almost every description of the variety.

None of these is an error. Retroflex stops exist as distinct phonemes in most Indian languages, so a speaker is transferring a contrast that their first language treats as meaningful. The "th" substitution has the same logic: neither dental fricative is common across the world's languages, and English is unusual for keeping both.

The vowel system diverges more quietly, and more pervasively.
Monophthongs where English expects glides
The FACE vowel in day and the GOAT vowel in go are produced as long steady monophthongs, without the diphthongal glide British and American English use. Nothing is lost in meaning. The vowel space simply sounds flatter and steadier to an ear that expects movement.
An unstable tense-lax contrast
Pairs like ship/sheep and full/fool depend in American English on both duration and vowel quality. In Indian English that difference varies by speaker and may not surface at all in fast speech. There is also a documented tendency to merge the STRUT, COMMA and NURSE vowels somewhere around a central [ʌ ~ ə ~ ɐ].
The practical consequence: the effective vowel space is smaller than the listener's system expects. Context resolves most of the ambiguity, which works in a quiet room and works much less well on a noisy call, where context is the first thing to be stripped away.
Rhythm and Stress: Where Comprehension Actually Breaks
If you had to pick one feature that decides how easy an accent is to follow, it would not be the consonants. It would be the rhythm.
British and American English are conventionally described as stress-timed. Stressed syllables arrive at roughly regular intervals, and the unstressed syllables between them get compressed toward schwa. Listeners exploit this ruthlessly: stressed syllables act as landmarks for cutting a continuous stream of sound into words.
Indian English trends syllable-timed. Acoustic work by Robert Fuchs on the speech rhythm of Standard Indian English finds that unstressed syllables keep more of their full quality and duration than in British English, producing a more even beat.
Fuchs and Maxwell's acoustic study of stress in Indian English (ICPhS 2015, comparing Hindi- and Malayalam-background speakers) found that stress placement usually matches American or British English, but the cues differ: Indian English speakers signalled stress through intensity, spectral balance, duration and pitch slope, in that order. American and British English lean far more on duration and vowel reduction.
That is the crux of it. The listener is scanning for length and reduced vowels; the speaker is signalling with loudness and spectral shape. Every individual sound can be perfectly clear and the listener still works harder, because the map they use to segment speech has been redrawn. It explains a familiar frustration: being asked to repeat yourself by someone who has just told you your English is excellent.
Intonation compounds it. Indian English marks focus and phrase boundaries with pitch patterns that differ from native varieties, so a plain statement can land as a question, or as hesitancy the speaker never intended.
Why Regional Backgrounds Differ So Much
"Indian English" spans speakers whose first languages belong to two unrelated families: Indo-Aryan (Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati) and Dravidian (Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada). Their sound systems are not variations on each other.
- Vowel quality and stress placement differ measurably between Malayalam- and Hindi-background speakers, which is why acoustic studies sample multiple first languages rather than treating the variety as uniform.
- Rhoticity varies regionally, as does how strongly retroflex consonants are articulated.
- The /v/ and /w/ merger is not equally complete everywhere.
Wiltshire's point is that this variation is not noise around a standard. Speakers use it to signal local identity while still participating in a recognisably pan-Indian variety. Any technology that treats "Indian English" as one target is generalising across a real and socially loaded spectrum.
Accent Is Not Proficiency
This gets muddled constantly in commercial writing about accents, so it is worth stating plainly. An accent is the phonological system a speaker acquired. Intelligibility is not a property of a speaker either. It is a property of a pairing. A listener who has spent two years on calls with colleagues in Bengaluru follows Indian English without effort; a listener on their first such call does not. Same speech, two outcomes. When a call goes badly, the honest description is that two phonological systems did not align.
That reframing changes what a reasonable solution looks like. If the problem were proficiency, the answer would be language training. Because the problem is decoding, anything that lowers decoding cost helps: listener familiarity, a slower speaking rate, cleaner audio, or signal processing.
